Sessions
Jakob Benum - Produsent Nerver

In the summer of 2018, two guys named Lars and Jakob are sitting in a generic office landscape somewhere in the west-end of Oslo. The work is repetitive and boring and so the two guys talk more about music and YouTube than they do any actual work. This is where the idea for a Norwegian, down to earth and volunteer based live-session concept is born. The goal: To create a platform for young up and coming musicians, focusing on thoe genres that were underrepresented in Norwegian popular culture at the time.

Later that fall a crew of like minded individuals are starting to form. A ragged band of students and freelance workers from different creative fields, all of them with a passion for music and a belief in what we are trying to achieve. The concept is given its name “Nerver Live Sessions”, the Norwegian word for “nerves”. The meaning is two-fold; It’s about hitting a nerve for the listener, but also about the nerves of performing on stage.

Fall becomes winter, and in a showroom in downtown Oslo a group of students are already well underway, recording intimate concerts with young, up and coming bands and artists. The production grows, and in six months we’ve produced over 30 live sessions. Visual and musical diversity is a focus. We are recording concerts with everything from neo-soul to country-rock, and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive from both the musicians and our growing viewerbase.

By 2020 our little idea had already grown out of our small showroom stage. Nerver Live Sessions was going on the road. Downtown Oslo was switched with a sunrise at the Vigeland park, a wintergarden on “wolf island” and a mountain top in the Øster-valley. We even managed to sneak into two ballrooms at the Bristol Hotel. New stages also ment new challenges. The learning curve was steep, but as our foundations were strong, it offered us the opportunity to grow. The creative freedom awarded by taking the show on the road reaped its benefits and our viewer count rose.

Three years and 68 videos later our concept isn’t as active as it used to be. The students have become worker bees, and volunteer work every other weekend isn’t as doable as it once was.

We are proud to have worked with, and gotten to know, so many brilliant and beautiful people we now call friends, as well has having experienced intimate concerts with so many great Norwegian artists such as Beharie, Odin Waage, TØFL, Kalandria, Daniela Reyes and Amanda Tenfjord.

We are taking almost half a million views on YouTube, over 2200 subscribers, 26 000 hours of listening time and a mountain of positive feedback with us.

Thank you all for being a part of the journey.
